I was just thinking about this (excellent) post partly because of the Grammy performance set in the heavy-industrial "Fame Factory" (!) and partly because of the Westboro Baptist Church's recent anti-Gaga video, a note-for-note (even reverent!) parody of "Poker Face," which you may have heard about, where the emphasis is shifted, at least in theory, from "the pain involved in the production of pleasure" to the pleasure involved in the contemplation of (Lady Gaga's) suffering. It is such a bizarre artifact. On the one hand it's obviously horrible and probably doesn't deserve any attention. On the other hand, it's just sort of stunning how completely Gaga wins in this battle--in the sense that even the WBC desire liberation through Gaga-Glamor-Fame, they just don't want to admit it?--or something like that.
