Sorry; meant it to sound spurious (Liberia has just been unusually active in this particular mode of endeavor). A good rule of thumb re: African economic statistics, though, is that they are all spurious in one way or another. The majority of African states have neither the resources nor the inclination to do the job properly, and in fact have a direct disincentive to do so: since development aid is the source of so much of the political class\'s wealth, it behooves them to manipulate statistics according to the situation. As a result, state statistics are on of the highest forms of creative literature the continent produces.

My goodness, some actual research. Thanks for that. I have to say, 97.3% does have the spurious accuracy characteristic of the fake statistic.

According to Wikipedia the composition of Liberia's GDP is as follows:

agriculture: 76.9%
industry: 5.4%
services: 17.7% (2002 est. CWF)

A big source of national revenue is the Liberian Maritime Program, more info of which can be found here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberian_Companies

However, I can find no info on this sort of thing being a major factor in Liberian economy, let alone contributing more than 90 percent to the GNP.

Liberia derives something like 97.3% of its gross national product from this kind of thing. A friend of mine has Liberian stamps from 2000 which commemorate the winner of the US presidential election, but when there was some confusion about who had won, Liberia just issued sets of both Gore and Bush stamps. That Liberia did not then have a working postal service, is of course, only par for the course.
